Things To Do in Somerset, WI
A village and a town in St. Croix County, WI, Somerset, can be found along the Apple River. The village of Somerset is located in the town of Somerset. General Samuel Harriman named both after his father’s hometown of Somerset, England.
Before the turn of the century, Somerset was bordered by cranberry bogs to the south. The terrain, due to its hilliness and swamps, sloughs, ponds, and bogs, naturally lent itself to the production of cranberries. These wet areas became very important during Prohibition as low spots where water collected, were ideal for moonshine production.
Somerset had a history of being a rough logging town via the area’s forests. Then, it transitioned into supplying the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis with bootlegged alcohol. After Prohibition ended, the citizens of both Somerset Village and town returned to the more humble and benign activities of farming and logging.
The area is still known for its brewers today, and both Oliphant Brewing and General Sam’s are renowned for their local brews. The local farms often specialize in hot apple cider, food that goes along well with various alcohols, and have some of the finest in farm-to-table foods.
