Once a gated community, North Oaks is now marked with private access signs, situated approximately 10 miles north of St. Paul in Ramsey County. With a population exceeding 4,500 residents, the North Oaks Homeowners Association manages local amenities, including roads, parks, and recreational trails. Initially established around Pleasant Lake, which once served as a water source for the Saint Paul municipal water system, North Oaks traces its roots back to James J. Hill’s land acquisition in 1883. Hill transformed the area into a sprawling 5,000-acre breeding and hobby farm, later passed down to his son Louis Hill. Following Louis Hill’s passing in 1950, his children undertook the development of the land into a model residential community.
