Things To Do in Hugo, MN
Hugo is a city in Washington County, Minnesota, about 18 miles north of downtown Saint Paul. It is part of the northeast portion of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan area, just north of White Bear Lake, right on the metropolitan boundary.
French Canadians originally settled the area. Hugo established itself as a refueling station for the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad. Part of Oneka township, the community was first given the moniker Centerville Station and then finally Hugo. The naming of the town is still uncertain, but most local histories point to the French novelist Victor Hugo as its namesake due to the overwhelming number of French-Canadian settlers in the area.
The city’s largest lake, Oneka Lake, is named for the Dakota word “onakan,” which means to “to strike or knock-off,” rice into a canoe. South of it is Rice Lake, where Mdweakanton Dakota from Mendota gathered wild rice. Both locations are the best places to go for boating, including pontoon boat tours over both lakes. Bald Eagle Boat Rental & Live Bait also rents out boats specifically for fishing and other enjoyment of the lakes, which are full of life and things to do.
